Backup Recordings
From NLTiVo
The program mfs_ftp can be used to move recordings between a TiVo and a PC.
The recordings in a TiVo are not kept in a single file. However, mfs_ftp can make the recordings look as if they are a single file that can then be copied to/from a TiVo. The preferred file format is tmf which stores all information attached to the recording, such as recording date, channel and guide data.
This is an excellent way to backup recordings if you are ever rebuilding your TiVo. You can then copy the recordings back afterwards. However, be aware that the recordings can be very big and copying can take a long time even over ethernet.
mfs_ftp can be obtained from: http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/showthread.php?t=21915.
Installation requires copying files to the Tivo and running Telnet, but the included instructions are very good.
For the more advanced users among us, there is also a way of backing up recordings when the disk(s) is/are being connected to a Linux-pc. For more information see this thread on the DealDatabase-forum.
